When we were in France in 2003 we went to a sewing machine museum near Lyon. Why don't they make them like this any more?! It was in the birthplace of Barthelemy Thimmonier, who apparently filed the first patent for a sewing machine, even though Singer and co. were the first to market them successfully. It was full of the most gorgeous machines, of every shape and size - dinky ones for children too.

I'm thinking of starting a website with links to lots of textile-related museums and tourist venues, so if anyone has visited one or knows of one, can you let me know? It can be anything from woollen mills, silk mills or museums, whatever... anything relating to fabric.

Yes I did, although my visit was somewhat curtailed by having to take one of my sons with me! His attention span wasn't quite the same as mine... It is a great place, though.

I found 5 or 6 textile places round the area though wasn't able to visit all of them - must go back sometime! The fabric museum in Vienne was good too - totally different. It used to be a working cloth factory and they demonstrated some of the machines while we were there. The kids enjoyed that one more than the one in Lyon...
